A passport is the ultimate form of proof of your citizenship. Every country in the world issues passports to its citizens. British Citizen passports are issued by the United Kingdom Identity & Passport Service (IPS). UK passports come in two sizes; Jumbo, which contain 48 pages in order to accommodate those who fly frequently and regular, which contain 32 pages.
You must have a passport to exit and enter the UK and all other countries in the world.
If your passport was issued when you were an adult (16 years old or older), your passport is valid for 10 years. If your passport was issued when you were a child (15 years of age or younger), your passport is valid for 5 years.
Your old passport will be returned unless the UK Identity & Passport Service (IPS) deem it to be damaged. The passport will clearly marked invalid, therefore it is important that you advise if any valid visas are still in the passport before applying for it to be renewed.
Most countries require that a passport be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of a trip. If your passport expires sooner than that, you must apply to renew your passport.
At least one visa page in your passport is required for each visa, your passport must have enough blank pages for entry and exit immigration stamps for each country you travel to. Nearly all travel visas that are stamped into your passport require an entire blank visa page. The blank page must be clean, clear, and not show any stains/ink including ink that has seeped from other pages.
As of 4th October 1998 all children must apply for their own passport.
The change of rules regarding the addition of children to passports does not affect children already on a parent's or sibling's passport. They can still travel using this passport until it expires or until they choose to apply for their own passport.
You don’t have to wait until your passport expires before you can renew it. You can apply for a renewal up to 9 months before your passport expires. IPS will add this remaining time from your present passport to the new one. Be aware that some countries ask for six months validity on your passport.
